The illustration first appeared in The Black Panther newspaper (March 21, 1971).

I come from a Native American family. I qualify to reside upon a Cherokee reservation though I choose not to (I have a personal bond with the land I live on), and I’ve done work with the Lakota tribe as well. What our Government has done AND CONTINUES TO DO to the Native American population is appalling. They’ve forgotten that all they’re doing is oppressing their brothers and sisters.
